bESTology Week 4-Is There a Second Life?
Topics
- Construction/Demo Material Management
- Recycling – trash problem and how can we solve it
- Rebuying – Is there a profit
- Reuse – Is renewing materials profitable?
Objective/Goal:
Students will understand how construction materials from demolitions need to be thoughtfully discarded to be cost and environmentally considerate.
Introduction:
Construction and demolition discarded materials have to follow environmental guidelines for hazardous and nonhazardous materials. Also, many types of metal from demolition and construction also have a recycle value. Use the links below to learn how demolition materials are considered for safety and profit.
Research/Reflect/Brainstorm – Time to think and expand your knowledge!
Grab your BEST Journal, notebook or online doc for notes to document your learning. Use various sources such as books, magazines, and websites from below to learn more about energy, forms of energy, consequences, and possibilities.
Use various sources such as the internet, textbooks, magazines etc. to answer the questions below.
- What are landfills?
- Can all construction materials be dumped in any landfill?
- What construction materials can be recycled?
- Can recycling materials be cost effective for demolition companies?
- Why is it important to safely discard construction materials in our communities?
Online Resources – list all links to material useful for research about the lesson topic

Activity – In small collaborative groups or individually choose one of the activities below sharing your learning with your team and school or community. Creation instructions for the different activities are accessed by the links.
BEST Connection – make connection(s) between the lesson and BEST Robotics program
- Create an entry for your Engineering Notebook sharing what you learned from your research and how it will help your team.
- Create a chart showing the prices for scrap metal of a demolition for 50 tons of copper, 25 tons of steel, 5 tons of aluminum, and 100 tons iron for your Engineering Notebook
Community Connection – make connection(s) between the lesson and your community
- Create a Public Service Announcement about landfill use and why landfills benefit your community.
- Create a chart showing the different types of landfills in your state. Which landfills can be used for Construction and Demolition materials?
Digital Citizenship
- Be sure to cite the sources and resources you used for your learning and projects by creating a Bibliography page in your project with the name of the websites and URL addresses
- Be sure to include the sources and resources used in your Engineering Notebook by adding the name of the websites, books etc. and the URL address
