bESTology 2025-Week #10
Welcome to bESTology 2025 fACTOIDS
This mission will focus on the ethical uses of Artificial Intelligent bots. As with any new technology or product, copyright and lawful use of information for ideas and projects always lags behind the use of the technology. Due to this lag of time, users have full access to explore, use, reuse, and share without consequences. It is actually the legal process that begins the design of lawful use of materials. The Library of Congress is the home for Copyright and Patents in the United States. During this mission you will be learning and thinking about how to ethically use AI resources for research, sharing, designs, and brainstorming. Let’s begin…
Lesson #9 “Generative AI has the potential to change the world in ways that we can’t even imagine. It has the power to create new ideas, products, and services that will make our lives easier, more productive, and more creative. It also has the potential to solve some of the world’s biggest problems, such as climate change, poverty, and disease.” — Bill Gates, Microsoft Co-Founder
Mission ten will have you explore copyright and privacy rights. You won’t know everything because even the laws haven’t caught up to all the ways Artificial intelligence is being used. Apply your critical thinking and reflection strategies to start thinking about the ethics around AI. Let’s examine this topic
When conducting a search for resources for this lesson, Google’s search displayed this summary.
AI-generated content generally cannot be copyrighted because copyright law requires human authorship. However, works created with AI assistance can be copyrighted if a human provides significant creative input, such as editing or arranging AI-generated elements. The U.S. Copyright Office has been actively examining the legal and policy issues surrounding AI and copyright, including the scope of copyright in AI-generated works and the use of copyrighted materials in AI training.
If I had to type the prompt, doesn’t that make the response/result caused by human authorship?
This is one of the questions being discussed at the legal level for movies, books, and even Art.

ACTIVITY
Review the Research Resources above, what do you think? Are there copyright issues with AI? Did you know that there are great uses for AI bots just like there are great uses for Internet Searches?
Brainstorming is a great way to use AI. Based on your prompts, the ideas and thoughts shared in the response/results can be great spring boards for project ideas. Using AI for a thought buddy like you would another student or friend is a positive way to use AI.
You can credit your use of AI by stating the prompt and AI tool used and the results. Using AI this way, builds your skills of using AI ethically. Has your team thought about using AI for brainstorming designs for the robot? Using the Video Teaser for the 2025 Annual Game, create a prompt focused on designing a robot to meet a challenge shown in the Game Teaser. When sharing the design the AI Bot responded with, should you mention the prompt used and the name of the tool? I hope you answer yes. Share your thoughts in your insights in your Engineering Notebook.
INQUIRY PROJECT
Bill Gates is a philanthropist and a co-founder of Microsoft. Thinking about his quote at the beginning of this lesson, how will you share what you have learned about the ethical uses of AI? How will this lesson support your team in sharing and showing the benefit of AI, with your robot design, construction, and software design?
