<\/em>Transportation with Technology<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Do any of the following sound familiar?\u00a0 \u201cTake the high road\u201d, \u201cRoad to success\u201d, \u201cHit the road\u201d, \u201cRocky road\u201d or \u201cAll roads lead to Texas\u201d?\u00a0 Let\u2019s take a ride down the information highway.<\/span><\/p>\n Technology surrounds us.\u00a0 Computers, smartphones, electronic tablets and more are present in our daily lives.\u00a0 But have you stopped to reflect on how technology is involved in our transportation systems? Jump aboard and let\u2019s travel on this journey together.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span>Resources to begin our journey:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0Brainstorming:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n According to Wikipedia, \u201ctransportation<\/b> is the movement of people, animals and goods from one location to another.\u00a0 Modes of transportation<\/b> include air, rail, road, water, cable, pipeline and space.\u201d\u00a0 As we begin our journey towards Bladerunner, brainstorm and list all of the modes of transportation in your community. \u00a0Subdivide them according to mode.\u00a0 Sketch a map of them in terms of accessibility to your location.\u00a0 Compare your list to the above Outline of Transport list.\u00a0 Share this activity with others and challenge them to generate a list of the modes of transportation in their community. \u00a0Determine whose list is more complete? \u00a0Have fun!<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0Writing:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Name five innovators of transportation<\/b>.\u00a0 The innovators may be individuals or corporations.\u00a0 Evaluate how their inventions impacted societies? \u00a0Summarize how technology has advanced their inventions through the years.<\/span><\/p>\n Writing Outreach:<\/strong> English as a Second Language (ESL) has become the focus in many schools and communities across America.\u00a0 Assemble a book or create a video to teach common words and phrases around transportation in your community.\u00a0 Identify and share with residents in your community who are not fluent in English.\u00a0 Post on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube to share.\u00a0 Remember, outreach is important in BEST communities!<\/span><\/p>\n BEST Robot: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Review prior BEST games and the mode of transportation used for the robot to complete its task. \u00a0Wheels and a trolley are two, how many more can you list? \u00a0BEST is always seeking new ideas for future games.\u00a0 Give examples of new ways of how a BEST robot could move throughout the field in the future.\u00a0 Create a list of new materials that would be needed in the kit to allow these movements to be mastered. \u00a0Be creative \u2013 share your concepts and ideas with your local BEST Hub Director.<\/span><\/p>\n Community Connection:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In today\u2019s society, technology is woven into our transportation systems.\u00a0 The days of horse and buggy and sailboats to transport goods, animals and people are in the past.\u00a0 Reflect on how electricity, computers, sensors and other various types of technology are involved in movement such as traffic lights, automobiles, elevators and more. \u00a0Determine who coordinates these systems?\u00a0 Consider what happens if the service is interrupted?\u00a0 Select a guest speaker to visit your class to address their transportation system specialty in more specific terms \u2013 challenges, the future, how it has changed over your lifetime, training, career opportunities and economic impact.<\/span><\/p>\n Bloom\u2019s Taxonomy:<\/strong><\/span> Workforce Skills:<\/strong><\/span> \n
