This week we celebrate pi &#8211; not pie, but Pi. \u00a0International Pi Day is March 14 (3\/14 or 3.14), which is also Albert Einstein&#8217;s birthday. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">First responders move rescue materials from \u201chere to there\u201d with the help of circles. Moving heavy equipment relies on wheels, propelling water is determined by the diameter of the hose and saving lives requires various types of tubing to deliver medical needs. List all the round objects \u2013 small and large \u2013 needed to deliver materials to the site and to perform rescue operations upon arrival. Include the state of the materials (solid, liquid, gas) and how they are transferred, used or delivered. Compare and contrast the round objects at your emergency scene with others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Fire and Rescue Journal<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Great job brainstorming, now let\u2019s look closer at a fire hose and it\u2019s nozzle. Create a chart in your journal to compare and contrast types of hoses, couplings and nozzles used for industrial fires and forest fires. Include the following terminology:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">jacket type<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">color<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">diameter<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">coupling<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">threads<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">flow<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Conclude by writing a summary of all of the \u201cround\u201d components of a fire hose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Challenge:<\/strong> Explain why the U.S. Coast Guard, as well as many chemical companies, use brass rather than aluminum couplings on their fire hoses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>BEST Connection<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Let\u2019s examine \u201chere to there\u201d for your BEST robot. Explain how round objects are involved with each of the following \u201chere to there\u201d tasks:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Movement \u2013 driving a distance of 10 or more feet<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Energy \u2013 battery connected to the VEX cortex<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Distance \u2013 Arm extending 3\u2019 or greater<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Power \u2013 Motor connected to the VEX cortex<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lift \u2013 from the ground upwards using a pulley system<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Remember, it\u2019s Pi Week \u2013 include the significance of Pi in each situation.\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget Einstein, he has some great theories!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Community Connection<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As first responders serve communities across our nation, it\u2019s time for us to serve our first responders pie (Pi). Identify first responders within a 3.14-mile radius of your school and create a plan to deliver pies and thank you cards on International Pi Day 3.14.17. Capture photos of your team baking and delivering pies. Post the photos in your team\u2019s exhibit booth and label as an outreach activity.
