Whether it\u2019s your home, your school, your car or even your life, how is the value calculated and how do we <em>insure<\/em> each item?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, <em>insure<\/em> is to provide or obtain insurance or to take necessary measures and precautions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This week let\u2019s explore the types, cost and coverage of insurance available to us personally and for our environment and community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Resources<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Types_of_insurance\">Types of Insurance<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Insurance\">Historical Look of how the Insurance Market Evolved<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Property_insurance\">Property Insurance<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iiminfo.org\/CONSUMERS\/HowInsuranceWorks\">How Insurance Works<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iiminfo.org\/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=IND0uI2Gjys%3D&amp;tabid=1700\">Homeowners Insurance<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iii.org\/fact-statistic\/fire\">Fire Insurance Statistics<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nahb.org\/en\/research\/housing-economics\/special-studies\/archives\/fire-sprinklers-and-homeowners-insurance-2007.aspx\">Fire Sprinklers and Homeowners Insurance Discount Rate Review<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rmiia.org\/homeowners\/Walking_Through_Your_Policy\/Homeowners_QA.asp\">Homeowners Insurance Q&amp;A<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>A Firestorm of Brainstorming<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Create a chart labeled <em>Types of Insurance<\/em>. Brainstorm and list the various types of insurance available to you, your personal items, your community and your surrounding environment. Expand your chart by including the specifics of what each policy covers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Next, review the above resources and add three additional types of insurance to your chart. Conclude by determining how many of the policies would cover fire or fire related accidents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Fire and Rescue Journal<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Refer your brainstorming chart above and research all of the factors that influence the insurance rates for each policy. Prepare for your future by writing five (5) positive things you can do now to decrease your insurance rates in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>BEST Connection<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As a BEST team creating a company, determine all of the types of insurance a business is required to have and which policies should they consider purchasing in addition to the required. Summarize how a fire would harm your company and how insurance would protect your company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Community Connection <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Invite an insurance agent to visit your school to share the types of insurance they offer and how rates are calculated. Include in your discussion the factors they consider when they suggest fire and disaster coverage for your home and business. Conclude by asking how discounts are applied and what is required to earn them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reflect on what you have learned this week and then ask three family members or friends to share the types of insurance they purchase.
