Regulations continued to evolve especially during the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century when the United States began creating regulatory agencies to protect the public sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Today in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century, fire regulations are abundant. From the flammability of the clothes we wear, the safety of the gas tanks on our vehicles, to the placement of smoke detectors in our homes \u2013 regulations are everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But who or what are these regulating agencies? Who is holding everyone\u2019s feet to the fire? bESTology will explore!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Resources<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Code_of_Federal_Regulations\">Code of Federal Regulations<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/\">National Fire Protection Agency<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/OshDoc\/data_General_Facts\/FireSafetyN.pdf\">OSHA Fire Safety in the Workplace<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/laws-and-regulations\">U.S. Laws and Regulations<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alabamaadministrativecode.state.al.us\/\">Alabama Code of Regulations<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">(choose from the drop down box)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/texreg.sos.state.tx.us\/public\/readtac$ext.viewtac\">Texas Code of Regulations<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bestinc.org\/b_year_book.php\">BEST Robotics Yearbook of Prior Games<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>A Firestorm of Brainstorming<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">List 15 things you do before you arrive to school each morning, i.e., brush teeth, dry hair, eat breakfast, ride school bus, etc. Choose six (6) and research the governing body (regulating agency) for each. Determine if the regulations are local, state or federal requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Continue with a discussion of the pros and cons of regulations. Name three regulations you would like to see abolished and three new regulations you would like to see enacted and explain why.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Fire and Rescue Journal<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Imagine a world with no regulations. Reference your brainstorming activity above and write a short story of a typical morning with no regulations. Explain if the products or activities would be safer or more dangerous if rules were not followed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Challenge:<\/em> Sketch all of the signs you see during the next week that warn or protect you from fire and accidents. Determine the regulatory body that requires each sign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>BEST Connection<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Analyze three past BEST games and discuss the types of real world regulations associated with the various game tasks and concepts. Evaluate each regulation in greater detail and determine how many include procedures for fire safety. Predict how fire safety regulations will apply to Crossfire 2017.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Community Connection <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bringing regulations closer to home, identify the fire safety regulations mandated by local, state and federal laws for your school.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Determine the number of students in your school and the approved occupancy number for the hallways, classrooms, cafeteria and other public areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Calculate the number of fire extinguishes required per square footage and the proper location of each.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Assess the type of fire alarm system, it\u2019s placement and any fire suppression system it may trigger.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Examine the emergency exit maps and identify all exit doors, ramps, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ask the administration to share the rules and guidelines for fire drills.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Investigate the requirements for the school\u2019s electrical code, placement of electrical sockets and use of extension cords.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Determine if fire regulations differ between high schools and elementary schools.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ask your school\u2019s administration to let your BEST team play a role in the next fire drill or inspection by the local fire department.
