Transportation with Technology

Do any of the following sound familiar?  “Take the high road”, “Road to success”, “Hit the road”, “Rocky road” or “All roads lead to Texas”?  Let’s take a ride down the information highway.

Technology surrounds us.  Computers, smartphones, electronic tablets and more are present in our daily lives.  But have you stopped to reflect on how technology is involved in our transportation systems? Jump aboard and let’s travel on this journey together.

 Resources to begin our journey:

 Brainstorming:

According to Wikipedia, “transportation is the movement of people, animals and goods from one location to another.  Modes of transportation include air, rail, road, water, cable, pipeline and space.”  As we begin our journey towards Bladerunner, brainstorm and list all of the modes of transportation in your community.  Subdivide them according to mode.  Sketch a map of them in terms of accessibility to your location.  Compare your list to the above Outline of Transport list.  Share this activity with others and challenge them to generate a list of the modes of transportation in their community.  Determine whose list is more complete?  Have fun!

 Writing:

Name five innovators of transportation.  The innovators may be individuals or corporations.  Evaluate how their inventions impacted societies?  Summarize how technology has advanced their inventions through the years.

Writing Outreach: English as a Second Language (ESL) has become the focus in many schools and communities across America.  Assemble a book or create a video to teach common words and phrases around transportation in your community.  Identify and share with residents in your community who are not fluent in English.  Post on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube to share.  Remember, outreach is important in BEST communities!

BEST Robot:

Review prior BEST games and the mode of transportation used for the robot to complete its task.  Wheels and a trolley are two, how many more can you list?  BEST is always seeking new ideas for future games.  Give examples of new ways of how a BEST robot could move throughout the field in the future.  Create a list of new materials that would be needed in the kit to allow these movements to be mastered.  Be creative – share your concepts and ideas with your local BEST Hub Director.

Community Connection:

In today’s society, technology is woven into our transportation systems.  The days of horse and buggy and sailboats to transport goods, animals and people are in the past.  Reflect on how electricity, computers, sensors and other various types of technology are involved in movement such as traffic lights, automobiles, elevators and more.  Determine who coordinates these systems?  Consider what happens if the service is interrupted?  Select a guest speaker to visit your class to address their transportation system specialty in more specific terms – challenges, the future, how it has changed over your lifetime, training, career opportunities and economic impact.

Bloom’s Taxonomy:
Assemble, compare, create, determine, give, identify, list, name, reflect, review, select, sketch, subdivide, summarize

Workforce Skills:
Critical thinking, reading, service orientation, speaking, systems evaluation, writing
